Ceske Budejovice is in southern Bohemia and dates from
the 13th Century. It is actually an hour away from Cesky
Krumlov by train and lies on the River Malse. It should
definitely be mentioned here that this town is the home
of the wonderful Budvar
beer! |
The Samson fountain (dating from the 1720s) on the main square
in Ceske Budejovie (Namesti Presysla Otakara II). The square is
named after the town's founder, King Otakar II and is approximately 1
hectare in size which supposedly makes it one of Europe's largest. |

A road side chapel on the outer wall of the

The Statue is of St John Nepomuk (see the
Charles Bridge page for more information). |

An interesting gate leading to the Cloister Church of
the Sacrifice of the Virgin Mary on the banks of the Malse. You
can see the White Tower in the background. |
The "Zelezna Panna" (Iron Maiden) which was
once part of the town's fortifications lies on the banks of the River
Malse. The "Zelezna Panna" is actually an old instrument
of torture which is on display in the museum in the tower in this
picture. |

Hluboka nad Vltavou is a very small town around 8 kilometers from
Ceske Budejovice. The castle was founded in the 13th century but
the present look dates from the mid 19th century. The
Schwarzenberg family (who owned the castle for a few hundred years until
1945 when it became the property of the state) apparently moved back in
to the castle in the early 1990s (bringing with them a large number of
antiques to refurnish the castle) and now run tours in multiple
languages. |
